Despite turning the ball over four times, No. 4 Hillsboro-Central Valley used two defensive scores to bring the fireworks and upset No. 2 Beulah 23-14 in the Burros’ home-coming game Sept. 18.

Nose tackle Barrett Willison and safety Sam Preston intercepted Beulah quarterback Trey Brandt, turning both turnovers into touchdowns.

“We played gritty football and got in there and got it done,” Willison said. “That’s tough football. That’s Burro football.”

Willison opened the scoring, jumping a screen pass toward the end of the first quarter and returning the ball 15 yards for a pick six.

“It was just a natural instinct reaction,” Willison said. “I dropped back and it fell into my hands.”

The score came on the first play after the Miners forced a Preston fumble in the red zone at their own 3-yard line after a long H-CV drive highlighted by running back Gavin Mitzel’s 33-yard run.
