Hillsboro-Central Valley’s junior varsity cross-country runners stepped into the spotlight Monday in the Burros’ final regular season varsity race in Lisbon, N.D.

Head coach Kirk Zink rested his top runners for Saturday’s East Region meet in Cooperstown, giving H-CV’s younger athletes a chance to run a 5K against more veteran runners.

“We wanted to get them there, let them run a 5K, and we like sending them there without the older, more experienced kids on our team so that they have to prepare on their own,” Zink said. “It was nice to see them go hard and see how they can do.”

The Burros boys team, led by freshman Lex Ellingson, finished sixth out of 12 teams while the girls team finished seventh out of 10 behind seventh-grader Shaycee Johnson.

Ellingson placed 19th in 19:14 to pace the team.

“If someone told me a year ago that Lex was going to be a 19:15-kid by the end of his eighth-grade year I would’ve called your bluff,” Zink said.
