HOPE, N.D. – Parker Vaagene’s smash down the third-base line scored the game-winning run in extra innings to lead Hatton-Northwood over MayPort-CG 5-4 on Wednesday.

The loss ended the season for the Patriots in the District 6 independent league tournament, which crowned Thompson as league champion Wednesday night.

The Patriots went 3-2 during their three-day tourney run that saw MPCG blank one opponent and stun another by roaring back for a win from a late 7-0 deficit.

“We battled. We did a lot of good things but we needed to make a couple more plays. That seemed to be the story of our season,” MPCG head coach Taylor Kunkel said following Wednesday’s loss.

“I told the guys all year that nobody was going to want to play us in the tournament. We’re a solid team and we showed it on the field today.”
