Gary Mueller admits this wrestling season has been a roller coaster.

The first-year MayPort-CG head coach came into this season with seven wrestlers – only two older than junior high.

However, with hard work and patience, the young Patriots program is sending junior Paul Whitaker and eighth-grader Hank LeClair to their first state wrestling tournament this week.

“It’s been a learning year,” said Mueller. “There’s been a lot of highs, a lot of lows and a lot of trying to figure things out.

“With as young as we are this year, though, it’s been exciting.”

Mueller, a 2004 Hillsboro High School graduate, is no stranger to the area’s wrestling scene.

He wrestled for the Burros in his varsity career and began coaching MPCG’s youth wrestling program four years ago

“My son was old enough to wrestle, so I figured if he was going to wrestle, I might as well coach,” Mueller said with a chuckle.

“Then the job opened up for the head coach and I kind of wondered if I might want to do that,” he added. “My wife pushed me toward it. Those jobs don’t just open up every day.”

MPCG hired Mueller in the midst of a rebuilding process for its wrestling program.
