Editor’s Note: Longtime Banner columnist and Hillsboro native Neil Nelson and his wife, Barb, moved to Harvey, N.D., in late April.

Neil Nelson will be the first to tell you that he’s a newspaperman, not a bar manager; yet, he managed both the Hillsboro Banner and the Vets Club for a number of years.

That included meeting beer and liquor trucks every week, in addition to meeting the Banner’s weekly deadlines.

Mix in bartending shifts and late nights at the Banner and the 70-something Nelson had his work week, weekends included, pretty much filled from 2007 to 2015.

When the club’s roof was leaking during rain storms, it was Neil who was there in the middle of the night emptying and spotting large trash cans.

He seldom, if ever, complained.

He might tell you that his legacy at the Vets Club isn’t one for the history books or for any kind
