The undeniable scent hit me even before I opened the door to enter the Northern Cass gym.

The smell of freshly buttered popcorn wafted throughout the interior of the rural Hunter school Tuesday night as the sounds of squeaking sneakers and cheering fans filled the air.

Yes, finally. Fall sports were back in full swing.

Even the most ardent high school sports fans can forget how enjoyable watching their local kids compete inside a packed gym can be.

The competitiveness and the never-ending drama inside the gym. The popcorn, tacos in a bag and chili feeds in the nearby lunch room.

I spent the evening covering the MayPort-CG and Northern Cass volleyball game, which turned into a pretty good thriller Tuesday and a 3-1 win for the Patriots.

You know what else turned out to be pretty good?

Those $4 ultimate nachos at the Northern Cass concessions stand.

I ponied up $6 before Tuesday’s action to get nachos, a Scotcharoo and a 16-ounce Coke.

Covered in cheese and salsa, the nachos were excellent. The Scotcharoo was, too.

Although imagine my surprise when my soda bottle asked me to share my drink with Thompson.
