I was the middle child in my family, and while my sister and I were only a year apart, my brother was born seven long years after me.

He wasn’t an “oops” baby; on the contrary, he was quite intentional, my dad’s last chance at having a son to carry on the family name. (“Erickson” is a pretty uncommon surname, you know.)

For several years, my sister and I treated my brother, Cory, as if he were a living doll.

We thought it was fun to dress him up in our Cabbage Patch Kids’ clothes, carry him around, feed him and play with him.
