In the dark of night, the weirdest things happen.

“But why do these things always happen to you?” the Baker/DA asks. She’s convinced I’m cursed.

It could be I’m just unlucky, I tell her.

“Luck doesn’t have anything to do with it. You’re cursed.”

Maybe I’m just jinxed, I said.

“Same difference.”

My latest interlude into the unexplained came during a weekend wedding trip deep into the land of 10,000 lakes, 100,000 pine trees and a couple million pinecones, in addition to a gazillion rain-soaked pine tree needles – all layering the cabin decks everywhere in the great state of Minnesota’s lake country.

Challenged enough by low-hanging pine tree limbs and pinecones everywhere, I found myself turned sideways and upside down even on the wet decks layered with pine needles.
