Is there room for compassion in journalism?

The question has been gnawing at me this week.

Whether it’s in the big city or a small town, good journalism demands that reporters be unbiased and refrain from sharing their values or beliefs in their stories.

The rule applies to the gathering of information and the stories we publish.

But what about before that, when the decision is being made to pursue a story?
