Party platforms are aspirational documents, offering an image of our hopes for the future.

Unfortunately, over 600 delegates of the North Dakota Republican Party have approved an appalling, mean-spirited, disrespectful and harmful resolution towards the LGBTQ community. Asserting that the LGBTQ community uses emotions to recruit our youth for their lifestyle, it fearfully warns, “Many LGBT practices are unhealthy and dangerous, sometimes endangering or shortening life and sometimes infecting society at large.”

Have they forgotten Matthew Shepard, the University of Wyoming student who was brutally tortured and then killed by heterosexuals because they thought he was gay?  Nowhere does the Republican platform suggest that heterosexuals engage in unhealthy and dangerous practices.

Does the Republican platform’s supposed support for the sanctity of human life apply if you are LGBTQ?

While their platform says the Constitution should be the supreme rule of the land and that no laws of a religious source should supersede it, the resolution uses religious freedom to justify discrimination against LGBTQ people.

LGBTQ youth have higher than average rates of suicide and suicide attempts. The Republican platform’s hateful language reinforces that. Our children, siblings, parents, friends and neighbors deserve better. I ask the Republican candidates running for the Legislature in District 20, do you support your party’s resolution?

Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Rather than accepting and welcoming discrimination, let us aspire that our laws and communities be accepting and welcoming of our LGBTQ relatives, friends and neighbors.
