My involvement with the church started at a young age.

It continues today, I’m discovering.

But it was at age 6 when the church was asked to disenfranchise me from any and all churches.

Lucky for me, the pastor of our Lutheran church didn’t carry much weight with northern Minnesota’s network of Lutheran churches.

Regardless, the church elders at the time were a little adverse, you can understand, to blackballing a 6-year-old kid, because their pastor wanted the poor boy banned from the church. All churches. And not only me, but Phil, too – the minister’s son.

Floris, my dear mother, bless her heart, couldn’t accept that I would never be allowed to attend Sunday School. Nelsie, my father, suspected the minister’s son was the real scoundrel. But that didn’t clear me of any wrongdoing.

“He might be the brains of the operation,” Dad said, “But you’re in cahoots, the two of you, always together and always scheming.”
