Never before have I been chastised, reprimanded, berated and censured, not even when I was in the Navy and upbraided for sneaking off the ship for weekend liberty.

Extenuating circumstances aside, the captain of our aircraft carrier took exception with the fact that the liberty card that got me off the ship carried my signature.

Jets were being catapulted off the flight deck, headed for North Vietnam, and the captain on the bridge was delivering a sailor’s dreaded Captain’s Mast, the Navy’s highest non-judicial punishment proceedings.

“Sailor, your signature on the liberty card could buy you an airplane.”

I’ll keep that in mind, I was thinking, looking down from the bridge at the A-7 Corsair jets being hurled from the Ranger.

“You understand the gravity of the situation here, right, sailor?”
