I ate Raisin Bran for dinner on my birthday last week. And you know what? That’s OK.

I didn’t set out planning to dig into a heaping helping of Kelloggs’ grape-filled goodness for my 44th birthday.

No, I had loftier plans.

I popped out of bed on Sept. 4 ready to conquer the world. Well, maybe not conquer the world so much as cover the Traill County Commission.

But becoming Earth’s supreme ruler is a multi-step process and you have to start somewhere.

I made it out the door by 7:50 a.m. and barged through the commission room door in time for the start of last Tuesday’s 8 a.m. meeting. I survived, popped into the office and fired off three stories all before 3 p.m. Not bad.

Knowing that my wife was still toiling away at her job, I thought I’d earn some brownie points by leaving early and cooking dinner, even though it was my birthday.

Adopting the rallying cry of my waistline – go big or go home – I trotted up to the local supermarket and bought everything I needed for chicken-fried steak and garlic mashed potatoes.

And then I made a slip-up that would spoil my plans: I called my wife.
