It could have been, would have been, is more like it, a Sunday just like any other Sunday if my old friend Kenny Houghlum hadn’t looked out his second-story window at the same time he reached into his closet for a suit to wear for church.

He was pulling a pinstripe gray suit from the closet when he saw his neighbor’s black lab with his snout a foot deep in his backyard, digging another hole, No. 13 by Kenny’s count, and he should know, for crying out loud; it’s his backyard, after all.

Queenie, the black lab getting a snootful in the Houghlum backyard, belonged to Major Leo King, retired Army and Kenny’s neighbor for too many years as far as Kenny was concerned. He disliked the major’s dog nearly as much as he disliked the major, which was considerable, considering how the two men hadn’t talked in the last three years, not even as much as a neighborly “hello” over the fence separating the two properties.
