Judy Gerszewski, 77, of Edina MN passed away peacefully and free of pain April 16, 2019 at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, with family at her side.

Judith Ann Fuglesten was born August 8, 1941 in Mayville ND, the third of nine children of Emma (Olson) and John Fuglesten. She spent a humble and happy childhood in rural Buxton, ND. She worked at the Buxton Bank after high school graduation, helping put her sister Sonja through college and taking college courses herself.

She met Reynolds-native Donald Flesche when he returned from a tour in the Army – they married and settled on the Flesche family farmstead in Reynolds. Judy and Don had two children, Tami and Troy, while living on the farm, later moving to Grand Forks for jobs at American Crystal Sugar. Judy’s career at American Crystal was very important to her and her colleagues became good friends.

Later in life, Judy married Philip Gerszewski and they made Yuma, AZ their home. When brother Glen (Mickey) moved to Yuma, they became a big part of Judy’s life. After Phil’s passing, Judy moved to Edina, MN in 2015 to be closer to family. While she always missed Arizona, she grew to appreciate Minnesota (especially the summers) and cherished family time.

Our mom was a smart, kind, fun and giving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend throughout her life.  We all appreciated her wit, her courage, her strength, her optimism, her compassion, her generosity, and her ability to find joy in the every-day moments. She enjoyed playing cards, being outdoors especially on a sunny day, spending time at her condo on Leech Lake, listening to country music, dancing, making cookies and lefse, and making time for an occasional happy hour. She loved the Christmas season and all that it represented.

She is survived by her daughter Tami (Jerome) of Edina, MN, son Troy (Michelle) of Mapleton, ND; brother-in-law Joseph Darling (husband of sister Sonja); sister Carole (Dave) of Chaska, MN; brothers John (Loretta) of Detroit Lakes, MN. Gary (Deb) of Buxton, Gene of Buxton, and Robert (Lorna) of Fergus Falls, MN. Judy has 5 grandchildren she adored – Jayda, McKenna, Drake, Lindsi and Jack, and a close-knit group of wonderful nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Donald and Philip; infant brother Palmer, sister Sonja Darling, sister-in-law Kathy Fuglesten (wife of Gene), brother Glen, and her aunts and uncles.

The family would like to thank and recognize the many wonderful caregivers and clinicians who took such loving and compassionate care of Judy throughout her life, especially during her time in Minnesota. We would like to especially thank the staff at the Fairview Health System as well as English Rose Suites, Judy’s home for the last 16 months.

Judy lived with Type 1 Diabetes most of her life – the family asks that any memorials support diabetes research and can be sent to: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 26 Broadway, 14th floor, New York, NY 10004.

Funeral Service: 11:30 a.m. Sunday, April 28, 2018, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Buxton, ND. Luncheon to follow.
