Brian graduated from Hillsboro High School in 2001, where he excelled in wrestling. He received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Jamestown College in 2005.  He completed Peace Officers Training at Devils Lake, N.D.

On June 18, 2005, he married Amber Mitzel at Hillsboro. Two sons were born to this union, Jackson Bradley and Weston James. In 2006 Brian began employment as a deputy with the Dickey County Sheriff’s Department. In 2007 they moved to Oakes, N.D. Brian enjoyed his career with the sheriff’s department and continued working there until his death.

Brian had a passion for all types of hunting and fishing; from paddle fishing by Williston, N.D. to big game hunting in Wyoming. He was also very skilled at doing so, as evidenced by some of the prize mounts in his game room. Brian was known as the “duckmaster.” He also enjoyed almost all sports, grilling the best steak ever and being with friends and family. His greatest love, however, was his family. He took great pride in his sons and in watching their progress and achievements, especially in sports. One of his proudest moments was when their boys won state wrestling.
