Food pantry aids 30 before Thanksgiving

About 30 families picked up turkeys and pre-Thanksgiving supplies Monday at the Hillsboro Kiwanis Food Pantry, a food pantry representative said Wednesday.

Rich Gehrke, a longtime Farmers Union Insurance agent and committee member of the Kiwanis food shelf for 29 years, said this year’s Thanksgiving rush at the local pantry matched levels seen in previous years. “It was about the same. People are gearing up for the holidays,” he said.

The Kiwanis Food Pantry hands out supplies and food items on the first and third Mondays of every month from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Hillsboro City Armory.

Even though the food shelf has handed out Thanksgiving supplies already, Gehrke said there’s still time for families needing emergency supplies to pick up food prior to Thursday’s federal holiday,
