Monday’s Hillsboro City Commission meeting focused on criticism and apologies for two hours before commissioners decided to regroup next month with intentions to move forward.

Commission President Terry Sando leveled a list of criticisms against Commissioner Levi Reese, suggesting he overstepped his authority on a variety of pet projects.

Reese countered that he believed he was helping out when and where the city lacked staff or expertise to deal with certain issues.

First, Sando revisited a request to include Rahr Malting in the city’s recycling program through Waste Management.

Reese had forwarded a request to the commission for consideration to receive the company’s plastic and glass waste. He had also contacted WM to explore options.

After that meeting, Commissioner Dave Sather, who holds the garbage portfolio but was absent from the meeting, objected to the city including Rahr since the company was not within city limits and had options for services elsewhere.

For clarification, City Auditor Ashley Frederick later contacted Waste Management.
