Months after applying for a federal grant to bring an automated bus to town, Hillsboro city leaders have announced they’re seeking a separate grant for a self-driving car.

Levi Reese, vice president of the Hillsboro City Commission, said Monday that the city has agreed to partner with Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers on a grant for an autonomous car designed to deliver health care to rural areas.

MIT will serve as the lead organization for the project, which will cover three areas.

Phase one would fund an Uber or Lyft-type vehicle that would provide mental health services to rural clients, according to Reese.
