A global pandemic won’t stop Hillsboro residents from lending a helping hand to their neighbors. The city’s third annual community day of service has been set Saturday, Sept. 19.

Curt Kaufman, one of the leaders of this year’s event, said organizers debated whether to cancel this fall’s day of service due to COVID-19 but agreed to forge ahead with the outreach project.

“We didn’t want to lose the momentum and the goodwill we had built up in the first two years of the event,” Kaufman said Wednesday. “We knew we needed to be respectful of COVID-19 and do things in the proper way, so we decided to scale back to two events.”

In prior years, volunteers participating in the day of service raked leaves for neighbors, wrote letters for veterans, packed meals headed for Africa and picked up trash in town.
