Chuck Breen followed the safety protocols.

The longtime Hillsboro physician wore a mask, sanitized his hands a half-dozen times when treating patients and socially distanced from those around him.

So Breen found it surprising – and a little ironic – to discover he was Hillsboro’s first confirmed case of COVID-19.

Breen was the lone individual to test positive for the coronavirus out of nearly 200 employees and nursing home residents tested earlier this month at Sanford Hillsboro Medical Center.

“That was emotional for me,” the 56-year-old doctor said Tuesday, his first day back on the job after being quarantined.

“My biggest concern was whether I would have spread it to any of my patients or nursing home patients, which hasn’t happened.”
