Organizers have canceled the annual Memorial Day community program inside the Hillsboro Events Center due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, Lynn Spiering American Legion Post #4 Commander Bob Hebl said a cemetery service at Riverside Cemetery north of Hillsboro honoring America’s fallen soldiers will proceed as planned Monday.

Activities will include a wreath lowering into the Goose River near the cemetery and “Taps” starting at 11 a.m. Monday.

A speaker had been lined up to give a Memorial Day address at the HEC but lingering concerns over COVID-19 – especially with a senior-laden audience – prompted organizers to scale back Monday’s services, Hebl said.
