Neighbors in the Riverbend Addition made their opposition known loud and clear Monday, telling Hillsboro city commissioners that a community orchard was not welcome in their backyard.

Commissioners planned to find an optional site on other city-owned land.

Proposed by commissioner Levi Reese last December, the 150-by-80-foot orchard is designed as a project to be maintained by Hillsboro High School  vo-ag and science students.

Reese, the school’s vo-ag teacher, secured a $7,500 grant to get the idea transferred from paper to dirt – money that has to be spent by May 31, 2020.
