Jessica Chasteen fondly remembers being a third-grader at Dickinson Elementary School in Sugar Land, Texas.

After all, her teacher, Patricia Johnson, was her inspiration to enter the education field.

Chasteen finds it fitting that she will now have a third-grade class to call her own.

The 23-year-old and fellow first-year teachers Hayleigh Lautt and Joseph Norris welcomed Central Valley School students into their classrooms Wednesday for the first day of the new school year.

“I’m excited,” Chasteen said Monday. “I’m one of those lucky ones who knew from 8 years old that I wanted to be a teacher.”
