The Hillsboro Business Association’s annual Christmas Cash campaign kicked off its 33rd year Thursday morning.

Officials at the city’s Dakota Heritage Bank and The Goose River Bank branches reported applications coming in for the holiday loans in the first hours of the 11-week campaign window.

More than $120,000 in interest-free loans was processed in Hillsboro last year.

“I have three applications on my desk already,” said Brenda Klath, loan officer at Goose River Bank, early Thursday. “People have already been asking.”

In Hillsboro, 24 businesses will accept Christmas Cash in 2020, including Sorum Oil, Nepstad Oil & Propane, Hillsboro Body Shop and Paul’s Hometown Repair.

Klath said the loans of between $500 and $1,000 often are used to finance larger purchases, such as fuel oil, car repairs or appliances.

Payments can be paid off over 10 months, and the Hillsboro Economic Development Corp. provides an additional 10 percent of the loan in free Christmas Cash.

The program encourages Hillsboro residents to shop local and support area businesses.
