Perched on his knees on the corner of a roof, Mike Ketterl tossed fistfuls of dirt and dried leaves from a clogged rain gutter of a home along Caledonia Avenue in Hillsboro on Saturday.

Ketterl wasn’t getting a head start on fall cleanup of his own yard. The regional sales manager for Loffler Companies rolled up his sleeves to help a stranger.

Ketterl and more than 60 others from the area fanned out across the city Saturday morning to take part in Hillsboro’s second annual communitywide day of service.

For three hours, volunteers tidied up yards, packed meals for African school children and stuffed personal items into stacks of purses earmarked for nearby women’s shelters.

“We’re here to serve our neighbors, whether they live next door to us in Hillsboro or across the ocean in a different country,” said Julie Johnson, pastor at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro.
