The U.S. Department of Agriculture has extended a food service program that provides free meals for students for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year.

The program, which has picked up the tab for school lunches for kids in Traill County and across the nation since this spring, had been expected to expire in December.

But USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue announced Monday that children across the U.S. can continue to receive free meals through June 30, 2021.

“As our nation recovers and reopens, we want to ensure that children continue to receive the nutritious breakfasts and lunches they count on during the school year wherever they are, and however they are learning,” Perdue said in a statement.
