A limited number of homes in Hillsboro could convert to natural gas as part of a pilot project being explored by Hillsboro city officials.

Hillsboro City Commission President Terry Sando said the project could bump up the timeline for bringing natural gas to residents.

“There’s the potential we could get natural gas in Hillsboro even before we get a pipeline,” Sando told members of the Hillsboro Economic Development Corp. Monday night.

Levi Reese, vice president of the city commission, said the pilot project will utilize new technologies being developed by the University of North Dakota.

“We’re basically looking at a virtual pipeline that would come to town,” he said.
