Ideal weather and high sugar content led to a record-breaking sugar beet harvest for American Crystal Sugar Co. this year.

The Moorhead, Minn.-based cooperative piled more than 12 million tons of beets at its stations in the Red River Valley.

“That’s the most beets we’ve ever laid on the ground,” said Dan Gowan, the company’s director of agriculture. “We expect a cold winter. The piles really settled out nicely.”
