Two Hillsboro teens are tackling Minnesota’s Lake Mille Lacs this weekend in search of scholarship opportunities.

The inaugural High School National Championship of ice fishing kicks off Saturday in Isle, Minn., where Hillsboro’s Mason Hennings and Truman Berge will compete against roughly 20 teams from around the region.

Hillsboro angler Shawn Hennings, who participates at numerous national and world fishing events, is chaperoning the pair and hosting workshops at the tournament.

The event is hosted by the North American Ice Fishing Circuit.

“We’ve been doing this for 19 years on the adult side,” said Hennings, who competes in the NAIFC. “We’ve been talking about doing a high school event for some time.”
