A North Dakota women’s prison population hovering near capacity could impact how Traill County incarcerates its female inmates.

The daily population of female prisoners overseen by the state Department of Corrections exceeded the state’s cap in mid-May, Traill County Sheriff Steve Hunt said Tuesday.

Speaking before the Traill County Board of Commissioners, Hunt said state prison officials could begin limiting the number of female inmates they accept from county jails if the trend continues.

“The female pen is full right now,” Hunt said. “If we had to send one there right now, they will decide if or when they will take her.”
