The Traill County Board of Commissioners delayed a decision on expanding the county courthouse’s parking lot in Hillsboro after learning the project could be costlier than expected.

Two weeks after asking county engineers for an estimate, commissioners learned Tuesday that adding a second parking west of the existing one could cost as much as $100,000.

Matt Lange of KLJ Engineering calculated the cost to design and oversee the expansion – and figure out drainage issues in the area – could hit $25,000 despite the small scale of the project.

“This is a small expansion. But the hard part is that our fee would be the same even if this lot was two or three times bigger,” Lange said.
