A slow-moving winter storm dumped more than a foot of snow in Traill County on Sunday, shutting down businesses in Hillsboro and stranding motorists along Interstate 29.

Traill County Sheriff Steve Hunt said blizzard conditions made travel hazardous before state transportation officials shut down I-29 from South Dakota to the Canadian border.

Nine people were rescued from their vehicles along interstate Sunday night and taken to the Hillsboro city armory to wait out the storm, Hunt said Monday.

“Roads were probably as bad as we’ve seen them for a while,” Hunt said. “But we still had plenty of people who were out trying to drive when they shouldn’t have.

“We had several cars stuck or stranded all the way from one end of the county to the other.”
