The Traill County Sheriff’s Department has opened an investigation into a pair of unemployment insurance claims unknowingly filed on behalf of two county employees.

County Auditor Glenda Haugen told county commissioners during a phone meeting Tuesday that her office received two letters from Job Service North Dakota seeking information on two employees who filed for unemployment.

However, neither employee has stopped working nor filed for unemployment benefits due to a work stoppage related to COVID-19, Haugen said.

Traill County Sheriff Steve Hunt said the employees are not related and work in different departments in the county.

Both workers are adamant they did not file unemployment claims, he said.

“With any disaster there’s always someone out there who is willing to try to exploit the situation and trying to make a buck off it,” Hunt said.
