The Hillsboro Business Association will sponsor tree-decorating and snowman-building contests in December after canceling the association’s annual Christmas carnival.

Local business leaders debated Wednesday how to replace the carnival, which has been an HBA holiday staple for years inside Hillsboro’s city-owned armory, to stem the spread of COVID-19.

After a lengthy discussion, the group voted to hold a snowman contest for kids and an artificial tree-decorating competition for families and businesses next month.

Entrants in the snowman contest will be asked to build a snowman in their yards – providing there’s enough snow – and upload photos to the Experience Hillsboro Facebook page.

Meanwhile, participants in the tree-decorating contest can bring their own artificial tree or ask HBA to supply one as long as supplies are available.
