The Hillsboro Kiwanis Food Pantry handed out 17 turkeys and other Thanksgiving sides to families in need this week but still is accepting donations ahead of next week’s holiday.

“We have received a lot of nice donations this year, but we do get donations every year around this time,” Rich Gehrke, a 29-year food shelf member and longtime Farmers Union Insurance agent, said.

Gehrke said the pantry was open Monday to assist families in need, and is open every first and third Monday of each month from 4-6 p.m.

The food shelf can be accessed at other times and Gehrke said there is a current need for canned fruits, as well as cereal, soup, paper products and toiletries, along with anything families can spare for Thanksgiving prior to the holiday.
