An early winter storm caught many North Dakotans by surprise Wednesday, dropping 4 to 5 inches of snow across most of Traill County.

The storm spared the area from its worst, however, with portions of Griggs County and western Grand Forks County receiving more than a foot of snow.

Grand Forks National Weather Service meteorologist Brittany Peterson said the highly variable snow totals across the region were a result of intense, lingering bands of snow.

“This was a complex system to forecast for,” she said. “We had numerous narrow bands develop and they passed over the same area several times.”
