Members of the Hillsboro Economic Development Corp. on Monday rejected a request from Hillsboro’s mayor for an $8,000 asbestos-removal grant.

City Commission President Terry Sando requested the grant to cover a portion of the $35,000 demolition cost to tear down the vacant former Hillsboro Banner building, which dates back to the late 1800s, along Caledonia Avenue.

Sando announced in early July that he was working with other private investors to construct a new building at the site to house a 7- to 10-barrel microbrewery and taproom operating under the name Goose River Brewing.

Sando submitted a grant application prior to Monday asking HEDC to help with tear-down costs to speed up the construction process.

HEDC members balked at the proposal, citing a lack of approving similar funding requests in the past and a shortage of available funds for the grant.
