The Hillsboro City Commission on Monday approved a resolution requiring residents to wear face coverings in public to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

City leaders were quick to point out the resolution wasn’t a mandate, although the resolution closely mirrors mask mandates approved Monday in Fargo and Minot, N.D.

Hillsboro City Commissioner Levi Reese proposed the resolution, pointing to a record number of COVID-19 cases that have surfaced recently in Traill County and across the state.

The North Dakota Department of Health reported a record 17 cases in Traill County on Saturday along with the county’s third virus-related death – a woman in her 70s with underlying health conditions.

State health officials announced a state record 1,036 positives on Tuesday along with nine new cases of the virus in Traill County.
