Brandon Abell and Adam Smith have gone ice fishing during whiteouts, when temps on Lake Winnipeg hovered around 28 degrees below zero.

The business partners and avid anglers aren’t bothered by cold, wintry weather.

It’s usually 72 degrees inside their mobile fish house.

The owners of newly formed I29 Outdoors in Hillsboro, Abell and Smith have become the only dealers in eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota selling and servicing SnoBear self-propelled fish houses.

“I bought a SnoBear last winter but I had a hard time finding one because there were no local dealers,” Abell said. “I had to get mine from Saskatchewan.”

SnoBear ice fishing machines got their start in West Fargo more than a decade ago, although the vehicles currently are manufactured in Isanti, Minn., north of the Twin Cities.

The customizable fish houses, which can be decked out with GPS and satellite TVs, have tracks and skis that allow vehicles to travel across snow-covered lakes regardless of weather.
