Rural BUXTON – Seniors at Central Valley School hadn’t set foot inside their school for 72 days prior to Sunday afternoon.

Forced home for months due to the coronavirus, Central Valley’s 15 seniors regrouped Sunday to receive their diplomas during an unconventional graduation ceremony.

Bottles of hand sanitizer greeted guests at the front entrance.

Parents and grandparents wearing masks shuffled into the school in pairs.

Graduates abandoned their side-by-side seats on the gym stage to socially distance 6 feet apart on the gym floor.

Superintendent Jeremy Brandt said the measures to combat the coronavirus didn’t detract from the ceremony – although they extended the length of the program.

“Not having everyone on the stage to get their diplomas and scholarship awards took a fairly considerable amount of time,” Brandt said.
