With Hillsboro Days on the calendar next week, city commissioners finalized a plan Monday to make downtown more hospitable to those celebrating the local holiday with a brewski.

Commissioners responded to an earlier request from event organizers to loosen open container laws to allow for designated outdoor drinking areas near local bars.

Lead organizer Randy Habeck will now work with the three local bars – Vets Club, Tap That and A&R – to provide plastic cups to customers wanting to take alcoholic beverages outdoors next Friday and Saturday during Hillsboro Days activities.

No glass bottles will be allowed, commissioners insisted, citing input from Traill County Sheriff Steve Hunt.

Bar customers will be encouraged to enjoy beverages in marked areas outside in distinct containers like a “red Solo cup,” urged City Commission President Terry Sando.
