Hillsboro City Commission President Terry Sando used Monday’s online commission meeting to lament a missed opportunity for the city to garner media attention.

The resulting discussion revealed miscommunication surrounding canceled drone flights over town and rehashed criticism of Sando acting without consulting fellow commissioners.

As promised, Sando orchestrated an “after-action review” of how UAS test flights intended to research ways to fight coronavirus were grounded April 17.

A lengthy back-and-forth online meeting revealed that miscommunication likely doomed the flights. Sando insisted the city lost out on a perfect chance to promote itself.

At a contentious meeting two weeks prior, Sando challenged the authority of the Traill-Steele Unified Command, a task force set up to address COVID-19 issues. He invited task force member Brenda Stallman, director for Traill County District Health Unit, to attend Monday’s meeting.
