Traill County remained one of 20 counties in North Dakota without a confirmed case of COVID-19 Wednesday, although officials are operating under the belief the coronavirus has taken root locally.

Ben Gates, assistant emergency manager for Traill County, said Wednesday that 87 county residents had been tested through Monday with zero positive cases found.

“We are sitting with no cases but we are operating under the idea we have cases,” Gates told the Traill County Board of Commissioners during an online meeting.

Gates said state health officials have not started widespread testing of individuals who could carry COVID-19 but remain asymptomatic of the respiratory disease.

However, that trend may change as more test kits become available, he said.
