City leaders in Hillsboro have asked Traill County to back the city’s efforts to land an autonomous vehicle grant to provide mental health services to rural residents in the area.

City Commissioner Levi Reese sent an email to County Auditor Glenda Haugen on Monday asking the county to draft a letter of support for the grant application.

In his message, Reese said the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass., has taken the lead in applying for the grant to offer local telehealth services.

“The autonomous vehicle would come to you and say on your way to work you could visit with your (doctor) or therapist,” Reese wrote.

A committee will be formed to ensure safety for the vehicle’s occupants, he added.
