Shawn Hennings traveled more over the past two weeks than many people do in a year.

The Hillsboro fisherman flew roughly 22,000 miles round-trip to South Africa earlier this month to compete for the USA Bass Team in the 15th annual World Black Bass Championship.

Hennings and the American squad finished ninth in the three-day tournament, hosted at the Emerald Resort & Casino on the Vaal River in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa.

Despite missing the podium, the 48-year-old angler couldn’t say enough positives about the trip and the tournament.

“It was absolutely amazing,” Hennings said. “The whole country laid out the red carpet for everyone. They were going to make sure everyone knew their hospitality.”
