Terry Sando’s stint as Hillsboro’s mayor may be defined by a variety of issues years from now. Being afraid to think outside the box won’t be one of them.

The former U.S. Air National Guard colonel has big dreams for Hillsboro as he takes over for Mark Forseth as president of the Hillsboro City Commission.

The 63-year-old Valley City, N.D., native rattles off ideas for promoting Hillsboro and bolstering its housing and job markets with ease.

The city could promote the construction of 3D-printed concrete homes likes the ones taking the Netherlands by storm, Sando says.

And there’s no reason Hillsboro couldn’t attract more businesses specializing in unmanned aerial systems or become a recharging stop for electric cars buzzing along Interstate 29.

“I have ideas I’d like to promote as mayor, but sometimes you have to get ideas out there to build a consensus and get a quorum,” Sando says.

“Hopefully I am able to provide some of those ideas because of my global perspective and travels.”
