Area farmers facing a difficult fall harvest could tap into an expanded property tax exemption for their farm homes thanks to a change made by the North Dakota Legislature earlier this year.

Legislators broadened the eligibility for farm resident exemptions, a change that could impact more than 11,000 rural residents in the state.

Kayla Knudson, Traill County’s tax director, told the Traill County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday that the county has 165 active farmers who may qualify for the exemption.

Given the relative uncertainty of this year’s harvest due to record-setting rain in the region in September, the expanded exemption could be timely for local farmers.
