The Traill County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved one-year law enforcement contracts with the county’s four largest cities.

Sheriff Steve Hunt said the revised contracts make adjustments in how the cities pay for law enforcement but the services and officers assigned to Hillsboro, Mayville, Portland and Hatton will remain unchanged.

Hunt said that the Mayville contract had a slight delay due to contract language requiring sheriff’s deputies to live in the city they serve.

The revised 2020 contract changes that language to allow Mayville’s deputy to reside within a 5-mile radius of the city, but also has a provision to seek an exception to that rule.

“(Deputies) would still have permission to go in and ask to live outside that radius,” Hunt said. “If someone wanted to live 6 miles outside town instead of 5, we didn’t want there to be a reason that they couldn’t.”
