U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao has announced that the Federal Aviation Administration awarded $32.4 million in infrastructure grants to 10 North Dakota airports, including the one south of Hillsboro.

Hillsboro Regional Airport was awarded $472,222 to build a taxilane and improve its airport beacon.

Larry Mueller, president of the Hillsboro Airport Authority, said airport officials anticipated federal funding for the project, which is under way at the airport 4 miles south of Hillsboro.

Funding for those upgrades follows a $2 million airport improvement grant the airport received earlier this year to pay for a new taxiway parallel to the airport’s runway.

The taxiway under construction will allow the airport to add more hangars and increase traffic at the facility.
